What Are Spanish Articles?

Articles are small words placed before nouns.

In English:

  • the

  • a / an

In Spanish:

  • el, la, los, las

  • un, una, unos, unas

Spanish articles must agree in gender and number with the noun.

This is one of the most important Spanish basics at A1 level.

Common Mistakes Beginners Make

❌ Saying β€œel casa” instead of β€œla casa”
❌ Forgetting plural agreement
❌ Not learning nouns with articles
❌ Translating directly from English

If you want to truly learn Spanish for free and correctly, always memorize the article with the noun.

Definite Articles (The)

Definite articles mean β€œTHE”.

Singular Plural
El (masculine) Los
La (feminine) Las

Examples:

El libro – The book
La casa – The house
Los libros – The books

Un (masculine) Unos
Una (feminine) Unas

How to Know If a Noun Is Masculine or Feminine

General Rule:

Most nouns ending in -o β†’ masculine
Most nouns ending in -a β†’ feminine

El perro
La mesa

⚠️ BUT there are exceptions:

El dΓa
La mano

You must learn nouns with their article.

Singular and Plural

To make plural:

Add -s if the word ends in a vowel
Add -es if it ends in a consonant

El libro β†’ Los libros
